All of us struggle from time to time with the question of what to do with certain, unwanted items. In some cases the item may be too large for curbside collection. In other cases we think it may be hazardous. And then there is items that are just too good to put in the landfill. Isn’t there some way to ensure that it gets reused, recycled, or disposed of properly?

Whatever the reason SUVSWD has created this section as an index to help you figure out what to do with your unwanted items. The list below is alphabetized. Just click on the item to learn what to do.

Unless otherwise noted, the follow items are accepted at the current disposal fee.  Loads must be covered to avoid additional charges.


AEROSOL CANS

Aerosol cans are accepted at SUVSWD.  Aerosol cans are considered Household Hazardous Waste.  Utah County and the EPA requires a list of all products and quantities to be presented at the scale house for proper logging and disposal. Please make sure your items are in containers that are clearly labeled and safe for handling.


AMMUNITION

Ammunition, such as bullets and shotgun shells, are accepted at SUVSWD.

Please contact us prior to arriving so we can set up special arrangements to properly and safely dispose of the ammunition. We will need your contact information, as well as where the ammunition came from. Make sure you have this information when you bring the ammunition to the Transfer Station.

Unwanted ammunition also could be taken to the County Sheriff’s Office.


ANIMALS (dead)

Animals are accepted at the transfer station. Please double bag and/ or cover animals for disposal. For larger animals, please call the transfer station to make special arrangements at the transfer station. Please refer to the fee schedule for current pricing.

NOTE: Farmers needing to dispose of large quantities of dead animals should contact the Utah Farm Services Agency: (801) 377-5296.


ANTIFREEZE

Antifreeze is accepted at SUVSWD. Antifreeze is HHW. We only take up to 5 gallons at a time. Utah County and the EPA requires a list of all products and quantities to be presented at the scale house for proper logging and disposal. Please make sure your items are in containers that are clearly labeled and safe for handling.


APPLIANCES

Appliances are accepted at the transfer station.

Refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, or any other item with Freon will have an additional fee to cover the proper freon extraction.
Appliances such as, washing machine, dryer, furnace, stoves, dishwashers, copy machine, water heater etc. are accepted.


ASBESTOS

Asbestos is not accepted at SUVSWD. Contact Utah Department of Environmental Quality for proper disposal locations. www.deq.utah.gov/air-quality/asbestos-disposal or call (801)536-4400.


ASHES

Cold wood ashes are accepted at SUVSWD. We ask that you soak the ashes overnight before dumping them off at the transfer station facility. There is no additional charge for ashes.


AUTOMOBILES

SUVSWD will accept automobiles only with original title, or registration and proof of ownership (valid driver’s license required). They will be charged by weight

This also applies to boats, bikes, scooters, four wheeler’s, or anything that is registered and/ or titled.

BALLASTS

Ballasts are accepted at the Transfer Station.


BATTERIES

Batteries are accepted at SUVSWD.
NOTE: Regular alkaline batteries and dead lithium batteries are not considered hazardous. They may be safely discarded as trash.
The batteries that must be brought in for recycling (because they are hazardous) are:
Lead acid batteries (car batteries)
button cell batteries (watch batteries)
rechargeable batteries
usable lithium batteries (dead lithium batteries are not hazardous)

BUILDING MATERIALS AND C&D MATERIALS

Building materials include items such as dimensional lumber, plywood, doors, windows, sinks, toilets, cabinets, etc.., are accepted at the transfer station as construction and demolition waste.

If you have used building materials in good condition, they may be accepted for donation at:

Construction and Demolition Material is accepted at the transfer station.

Examples of C&D are: Rock, Dirt, Sheet Rock, Concert, Sod, Railroad ties, tress stumps, finished wood, tile and / or any material coming out of a remodel.

CARDBOARD

Clean cardboard is accepted at Transfer Station for recycle.


CARPETING & RUGS

Area rugs are considered household trash and may be discarded.

Wall-to-wall carpeting is considered construction and demolition material.  It is accepted at the Transfer Station.


CELL PHONES

Cell phones,  pagers and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants)  are accepted at the Transfer Station and also for recycling at the local stores listed below. Contact the store directly for hours of operation:

CHRISTMAS TREES

Christmas trees are accepted at the transfer station.  Some cities provides a pick up schedule for Christmas trees on their websites.


CLOTHING & OTHER TEXTILES

Clothes are accepted here at SUVSWD.

The transfer station has a clothing donation bin provided by Tabitha’s Way.  There is no charge for donations.  The following donation drop offs are:

COMPUTER DISKS, CDs & VIDEO TAPES

All these items are accepted at the Transfer Station for disposal.


COMPUTERS & ELECTRONIC

Please check the fee’s section for current pricing on various items.  Residential customers are limited to 3 items per trip.  Commercial business cannot dispose of computers or electronics at the Transfer Station.


C&D

Construction and Demolition Material is accepted at the transfer station.

DIRT

Clean fill dirt is accepted here at SUVSWD. This is dirt that hasn’t had anything spilled or chemicals of any kind mix in with it.
Anything that is contaminated needs to be tested. Please be sure to contact Marc Loveless before hand, he will need to approve any contaminated soil that is being brought in. He will have to do testing on it to know what level of contaminated soil we need to charge for.


DEMOLITION OF A HOUSE/ BUILDING

Building demolition is accepted here at the transfer station. We need to receive proper paperwork before the load is accepted. Since there maybe material in the home or building being demoed, we don’t accept (example asbestos). We will need the air quality report and the city building permit.


Electronics

We accept electronics at SUVSWD. Please refer to the rate schedule for current pricing.


EXPLOSIVES & FIREWORKS

Unwanted explosives and fireworks (including highway flares) are not accepted at the transfer station. You can take to your local police or fire station.


FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Some fire extinguishers can be refilled. Contact your retailer or the manufacturer to learn more about this option.

Unwanted fire extinguishers are accepted at the Transfer Station for disposal.


FLUORESCENT LIGHTS

Fluorescent lights are accepted at the Transfer Station.  Please no more than 10 bulbs at a time.


FURNITURE, MATTRESSES, & HOUSEHOLD GOODS

The Transfer Station accepts furniture, mattresses, and household goods.  You can also donate them:

GREETING CARDS & WRAPPING PAPER

Greeting cards and wrapping paper are accepted SUVSWD for disposal.


GASOLINE / FUEL

Is accepted at SUVSWD. Gas is hazardous waste. We only accept 5 gallons per customer. Please bring gasoline/ fuel in a container that you can leave at the transfer station.
Note: it is illegal to dispose of gas and other fuels improperly.


GREEN WASTE

Green waste is accepted at the transfer station.


HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

Household hazardous waste is accepted at the transfer station for residents only, no commercial businesses. Utah County and the EPA requires a list of all products and quantities to be presented at the scale house for proper logging and disposal. Please make sure your items are in containers that are clearly labeled and safe for handling. If possible, leave the HHW in its original container. This container will be left at the transfer station. We only accept up to 5 gallons of HHW per visit.


LIGHT BULBS

Light Bulbs are accepted at the transfer station.


MERCURY-CONTAINING DEVICES

Some common household items contain mercury, including thermometers, thermostats, fluorescent lamps, ballasts, etc. Mercury-containing items should not be discarded as trash. Most of these items are accepted at the Transfer Station. Call ahead to make special arrangements.


MOTOR OIL & FILTERS

Used motor oil and oil filters are accepted at the Transfer Station for residents only, no commercial businesses.  Quantity is limited to no more than 5 gallons. Please bring oil in a container that you can leave here at the transfer station.


MATTRESS

Mattresses are accepted at the transfer station. Please see current rate schedule for pricing. We do not recycle mattresses. The additional charge for mattresses is a disposal fee.


METAL

Metal is accepted at the transfer station.

PACKAGING PEANUTS –  BUBBLE WRAP

These items are accepted at the Transfer Station, but are not considered recyclable at the facility.


PAINT

Paint is accepted at the Transfer Station.  Paint must be dried out prior to disposal.  Kitty litter or saw dust may be added to dry up old paint. Once paint is a solid you can bring it here to the transfer station.


PESTICIDES

Pesticides are accepted at the transfer station as hazardous waste. Please keep all pesticides in their original container. Utah County and the EPA requires a list of all products and quantities to be presented at the scale house for proper logging and disposal. Please make sure your items are in containers that are clearly labeled and safe for handling. We can only accept up to 5 gallons per visit.


PIZZA BOXES

Pizza Boxes are accepted at the Transfer Station for regular disposal. They are not considered recyclable.


PLASTICS

Many cities now offer curb-side recycling cans for their residents.  You may also bring clean plastics to the Transfer Station for recycling.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS

Some Local Police Station have a drop box for prescription medication
In most cases, unwanted prescription medication SHOULD NOT be placed in the trash.
We do not accept prescription medications here at the transfer station.
Contact the Utah County Health Department for the best location to dispose of prescription medication.


PRINTER & TONER CARTRIDGES

These items are accepted at the transfer station.  However, some printer and toner cartridges can be refilled. To learn more about this option, contact:

PROPANE TANKS

Propane tanks are accepted at the Transfer Station.


RAILROAD TIES

Small quantities of railroad ties are accepted at the Transfer Station as construction and demolition waste.

Large loads of railroad ties should be taken to DCD located at 520 N. Geneva Road, Orem, Utah (801) 225-5058.


REFRIGERATOR

Refrigerators, freezers, or other items with Freon are accepted at the transfer station. We do charge a fee to certify the Freon extraction. Please see our current rate schedule for pricing.


SCRAP METAL

Scrap metal is accepted for recycling at the Transfer Station.  Scrap metal includes: most bicycles, desks, filing cabinets, shelves, VCR’s, grills, lawn furniture, and any item that is at least 80% metal.


SMOKE DETECTORS

Smoke detectors are accepted at the Transfer Station for disposal.


SPORTING GOODS

Sporting goods are accepted at the Transfer Station for disposal.

Used sporting goods in good condition are accepted at:

STYROFOAM
Styrofoam is accepted at the Transfer Station, but is not recycled.


SYRINGES – LACETS – AUTO INJECTORS – INFUSION SETS- CONNECTION NEEDLES/SETS

These items are accepted at the Transfer Station. FDA disposal guidelines state they are to be immediately placed in a sharps disposal container. FDA-cleared sharps containers are generally available through pharmacies, medical supply companies, health care providers and online.  If an FDA-cleared container is not available a #1 PETE soda bottle can be used.  The PETE bottles are identified with a “1” inside a triangle on the bottom of the bottle.

Never place loose needles and other sharps (those that are not placed in a sharps disposal container) in the household or public trash cans or recycling bins, and never flush them down the toilet. This puts trash and sewage workers, janitors, housekeepers, household members, and children at risk of being harmed.

Pet owners who use needles to give medicine to their pets should follow the same sharps disposal guidelines used for humans.

TELEVISIONS

Televisions are accepted at the Transfer Station for recycling.  Price for disposal varies depending on quantity and television size.  Please refer to the current fee structure.


TIRES

Tires are accepted at the transfer station for recycling, and limited to 4 at a time for residents.  Commercial dumping is not permitted.  Please refer to the current fee structure for varying prices and tire sizes.

WOOD & YARD WASTE

Green waste such as leaves, weeds, and grass clippings are accepted at the Transfer Station.  Please refer to fee schedule for pricing.

Larger items such as brush removal, tree stumps, tree limbs will be weighed at the current tonnage disposal fee.


WRAPPING PAPER

Wrapping paper is accepted at the transfer station.  It’s not considered recyclable.
