Statement from Provo Cities Mayor John Curtis

Many have heard that there are some changes afloat at the Provo Compost Yard. Sadly it’s true. The economics of the situation have been problematic causing large subsidies. The compost economy has changed significantly over the last 25 years since Provo was one of the first Utah communities to operate a compost program.

At that time, there was a large demand relative to the supply, and significant savings associated with a compost program. Today, with so many more communities composting, the supply of compost now vastly exceeds the demand; and the net cost of composting is as much, or more than the cost of simply landfilling it.

The current changes in the program are being made to operate this important program as cost effectively as possible, recognizing the value that it has to so many residents in our community. There are still some unanswered questions but here’s what we know.

The compost yard will reopen under Provo City Management on March 4th and will be open through December 3rd from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. (weather dependent) on Fridays and Saturdays.

Drop off of material will be limited to Provo residents who will need to come with a copy of a current City of Provo utility bill.  A $5.00 fee for pickup truck loads and for trailers up to 16’ will be applied to their utility bill for each drop off. An additional charge will apply to larger trailer loads.

No stumps or roots will be accepted; nor will any logs larger than 10” in diameter. Logs larger than 4” in diameter will need to be cut to lengths no greater than 3’.

No loads from commercial haulers or landscapers will be accepted.

Mulch will be available to purchase for residents at $2.00 per yard, and for nonresidents at $5.00 per yard, depending on availability.

The Compost yard will be open all week during the Spring and Fall Cleanups, and drop off will be FREE during those weeks. Hours of operation during the seasonal Cleanups will be from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

  • Spring Cleanup: March 28th – May 7th.
  • Fall Cleanup: September 26th – November 5th.

Compost Products

Black Gold Compost $25.00 per yard

Our most popular compost, is made up of bio-solids, leaves, christmas trees, grass, tree limbs, flowers and clean lumber. This can be used around bases of trees, pathways, planters and gardens. This product has been treated and held off temperatures of 140-160 degrees Fahrenheit. This helps in killing weed seed, pathogens and any other organisms. Black Gold compost, gives you a  material rich in color and can be used in  many outdoor applications to enhance the soil appearance and improve soil quality.

Green Cycle Compost $20.00 per yard

Apply around the base of trees, shrubs, along pathways or in planter boxes. This will help soil retain moisture by reducing the rate of water evaporated through the air.
